ABOUT Dr. Tommy Davis & THIS PROJECT Tommy Davis, a native of Natchez, Mississippi, began singing at age five in a small, church choir in Church-Hill, Mississippi. At the age of nine, Tommy sang his first solo. His intense singing style and interpretations of Biblical Scriptures later earned him the title, 'The little preacher boy.' At thirteen, Tommy, aided by a Memphis, Tennessee musician and two friends, organized Natchez's first gospel music workshop, a week long event ending with a musical presentation by fifty of the city's leading gospel singers. It became an early lesson in the demands of leadership. As a child, Tommy devoted many hours listening to recorded sermons by Rev. C. L. Franklin and Rev. Cleophus Robinson, Sr. Inspired by them; Tommy found his own singing and Scripture interpretations reflecting a similarly fiery presentation. He imitated the gospel blues style of Rev. Robinson, who stood out even among his contemporaries for the silky, yet spirited and heavily blues sound of his singing. The honesty and intensity of Aretha Franklin further defined Tommy's musical presentations. Aretha's musical testimonies awakened an interest in secular music as well; subsequently B.B. King, Ruth Brown, and Al Green made an impression on the young singer. Later hip-hop and neo-soul music captured his heart. Tommy entered college at sixteen, and by his twenty second birthday he had earned Bachelor and Master's degrees, married and become the father of two daughters, Antoinette and Ashley. Everything seemed clear to him until his mother's death. Driven by feelings of loss, Tommy left the small Southern communities for New York City. The entire city became a classroom for him and his small family, and his struggles, catalysts for important lessons in life. He earned several more graduate degrees and practiced his counseling skills in Harlem, the South Bronx as well as directed the counseling division of a leadership development program in Manhattan. Tommy relocated to Philadelphia where he believed he could impact the lives of Philadelphia's Inner City Residents. Approximately, a month later, he had found a home at Philadelphia's Bright Hope Baptist Church. While he completed his dissertation, and further practiced and developed his skills as a clinician, college professor, and an administrator, at his new church home Tommy became a member of the choir and participated in several organizations and programs and served as Chairman of the Men's Day Committee. However, his childhood experiences continued to beckon for expression, and the burning fire within became ever more present in his singing. Finally, God, through life's circumstances, compelled the creation of this CD. 'You Are Still Loved' is one installment, in the re-emerging spirit and diversity that is Dr. Davis. In the spoken words and music, Dr. Davis is clearly going back home. The project contains traditional and contemporary gospel music characterized by soul, hip-hop, neo-soul as well as the strong southern blues sounds that he heard during his Mississippi upbringing. It contains advice for healthy living informed by Scripture, counseling practices, and spiritual concepts. This CD is for anyone who strives to realize his or her purpose and potential and to achieve a better life. More than a gospel music album, it proclaims to people from all walks of life, 'You Are Still Loved'; it does not matter who you are, what's your past, or what's your current situation. This project highlights the Divine Presence within you that bears witness to a Love that can sustain you and transform your life.
