Girl Gone Jazz on CD

"Music is a language of the human spirit. I love lifting people up through the power of song!' ~ Sandra "Sandra Locklear sings and plays with a shimmering sensuality and the voice of experience." ~ Maggie Larrick, Capitol Hill Times 'You play each note with such energy and joy!' ~ Richard, author and inventor A FRESH SOUND EMERGES Sandra Locklear pairs a rich alto voice with sensuous jazz piano stylings refined over a dynamic path that includes overseas, Canadian and stateside tours. With passionate virtuosity honed since she took her first piano lesson at age 7, the pianist and singer-songwriter glides with ease between musical genres and her own compositions. After the release of her all-original debut CD 'Goddess Rising,' Sandra wanted to pay tribute to her some of her favorite jazz songs. GIRL GONE JAZZ CD On 'Girl Gone Jazz' Sandra returns to her jazz roots to present an elegant collection of standards and her own compositions. Executive producer Doug Hughes spotted Sandra in a Seattle dinner club and paved the way for the recordings. From playful to relaxing, listeners are treated to clean arrangements that allow Sandra to give standards like "My Baby Just Cares for Me, " "Here's To Life" and "Sentimental Journey" a fresh perspective. Her best, however, may be the stunning emotion that pours through her voice on the classic folk song "House of The Rising Sun." SANDRA AS COMPOSER AND PERFORMER "My writing style can change from song to song because I try to be true to what's being conveyed. You can't do that if you're stuck in a box.' Composing intuitively from a woman's perspective, in a balance of lyric and melody Sandra wraps jazz-like harmonic sensibilities around her tender and forthright feminine observations on life. 'In Your Dreams" ventures into the upbeat Latin-jazz realm while her ballad "Rainy Afternoon" suggests an irresistible eroticism. Meanwhile, "Let Me Love You" is a swinging foray into progressive jazz. With her typical disregard for musical boundaries, Sandra's original music on 'Girl Gone Jazz' is a stylistic mix. INSPIRATIONS AND STUDIES Sandra began jazz and classical keyboard training at age 7 with professional musician Margo Beecher. A performing artist with classic tastes in jewelry and furs, Margo played Hammond B-3 organ in Ricky Ricardo's band and was in demand in LA's Local 47 with her friends Nat King Cole, Louie Prima and Keely Smith. Under her mentor's careful tutelage, Sandra absorbed the music of Ellington, Jobim and J.S. Bach as standard fare for her lessons. By middle school Sandra was performing at weddings, fashion shows and church and went on to win Yamaha's Young Artists NW Regional Organ Competition in high school. Later, jazz organ studies in San Francisco inspired her to enroll in a college music program back in Washington State. But she was unable to resist the lure of the road and began touring Canada on the organ with a quartet . To satisfy her soul, Sandra ventured to Sierre Leone, West Africa to study the roots of jazz and continued performing regionally and overseas as a solo artist and single mom. In-between, she studied jazz piano and theory at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle and composition and music education at the University of Washington. Juggling family responsibilities with the demands of a musical career, Sandra eventually earned her music degrees Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude. She is a certified music specialist and arts activist. Her company, ThunderEye Music, produced her CD's GODDESS RISING and GIRL GONE JAZZ. Sandra spent her formative years listening to the British rock invasion and protest music of the 60's while learning jazz and Latin standards from her mentor. Alongside the indigenous sounds of the planet, many artists soothed her soul and shaped her ears, a list that includes Bill Evans and Jimmy Smith, Astrud Gilberto, Shirley Horne and Sarah Vaughn. "Our world is a rich and responsive tapestry of sound vibrations and frequencies," says Sandra. "I'm grateful for my gifts and just sing and play what I feel." With her own sure vision Sandra sets a fresh standard full of vitality and soul. CONTACT AND BOOKING: info@sandralocklear.com.
