Dancing Stars & Moonlit Mountains on CD

'Radiates charm...' Melbourne Age 'one of the most beautiful melodies I've heard in a while. I woke up with it in my head...' Kristina Olsen (about the song 'Dancing with the Stars.' As a performer Raelene Bruinsma has been known to move an audience to tears, followed by foot-stomping, belly-aching laughter. Her onstage presence is immediately engaging. She has a lyrical sensitivity, vocal style, and even appearance, which have on occasion drawn comparisons with Joni Mitchell. However, something distinctly Australian permeates the landscape and earthiness of her style, yet never in a clichéd manner. Her 'jazz and blues-tinged folk' style, is perhaps be best described as 'Joni Mitchell meets Penelope Swales.' In Dancing Stars and Moonlit Mountains the crystal warmth of Raelene's versatile voice, is beautifully set in subtle, sometimes soulful, and sometimes lively, instrumental arrangements which serve to bring her lyrics alive, while retaining the deceptive simplicity and raw beauty of the songs. Raelene revelled in working with some of Melbourne's finest folk, world and blues musicians, including Mal Webb, Sandy Brady, Deborah Hocking, and Marvin Lorne during the recording process. Born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, Raelene's love of music was clear from a young age. But it wasn't till after she'd graduated and worked as a Registered Music Therapist for some years that she turned her hand to song writing and retraining her voice in jazz, blues, gospel and folk singing styles. Her earlier musical life included classical training, singing in choirs, playing flute in bands and orchestras and developing techniques of using music in therapy. She even played in the Illinois All State Honours Band in 1985 while visiting the States as an exchange student, did backing vocals for Barry Manilow when he toured Australia in 1983 and for Australia's Marcia Hines when she sang in a Royal Command Performance for Prince Charles and his then new wife, Princess Diana in the same year! While all of these experiences inform Raelene's current style and sense of musicality, she has firmly established herself in a folk-jazz-blues idiom. She has studied music with people such as internationally loved folk artist Kristina Olsen, blues singer Kelly Auty, and many others.
