Quaker Hill on CD

QUAKER HILL is an instrumental album by Maryland area guitarist-arranger-composer Phil Sims. It has influences of jazz, classical, new age, world fusion, and music for film. Opening the album, Sims' 'Suite For Guitar' is a virtuoso classic guitar piece supported by unique contemporary orchestration. The album continues on, taking the listener on a journey through new age synth sounds with avant garde orchestrations and a wide variety of guitar sounds including steel string, nylon string, acoustic, electric, and guitar synthesizer. Sims' 'Celtic Rain' is reminiscent of the work of Alan Stivell. 'Gentle Rain' explores the melancholy sounds of a plaintive classical guitar duet. The journey continues on until the final piece 'December Day', a new age jazz composition that closes the album and leaves the listener with an upbeat mood. From the album liner notes: In art we are not limited to one style, to one goal, to one way of being, hearing,or seeing. Whether music is commercial or avant-garde, orchestral or solo, improvised or exacting, is not the point. Music is perhaps a reflection of the path you are on. This album is a visit to some of the overlooks on Quaker Hill.
