Dal Basso Della Terra on CD

An opera previewed to the Pope in Vatican in January 2004. He was so enthusiastic of it that he authorized the inclusion of his image and his signature in the CD cover and, as an exception, he introduced the CD with his voice saying: "Fratelli e sorelle ascoltate questo messaggio di pace" ("Brothers and sisters, do listen to this message of peace"). It is not a collection of songs but a project that has involved hundred of people from any part of the world some of them as singers, some of them as musicians representing cultures, ethnic groups and religions. Songs are linked by two threads: lyrics and melodies. The lyrics, by Ernesto Olivero, founder of the Peace Arsenal of Turin-Italy, Sao Paulo-Brasil and Amman-Jordan (the man who most of everybody met the Pope in a private way), were inspired by the numerous meetings, who deeply marked his life, with prisoners, refugees, politicians, young people, financiers, missionaries, ordinary people, well-off and poor people.... meetings that, a messenger of peace in the world, turned into life experiences and in non-conventional lyrics of strong emotional impact. Mauro Tabasso composed the melodies using rhythms, instruments and colours from music traditions of various countries around the world. The work was recorded in Brazil: among the Sao Paulo Arsenal of Hope's guests, among the "niños de rua" of Salvador de Bahia, in an Italian cloister, in a European school, in Amman (Jordan) and in many other places. Musicians and instruments from India, North and South-America, Africa, Australia, Arabia and Israeli. The first track is very significant: the shivering voice of John Paul II; then it comes "Croce con la Croce": a composition blending ethnics instruments with classic orchestra and alternating solo voice to Gregorian chant. "Per Te", with organ and brass quintet accompanying a procession: antique colours for a catchy melody. "Miserere", a four-voice chorus starting a cappella, interrupted in the middle by the cutting sound of a rock guitar with an Hammond. "Pietà", where the valuable solo performance of NAIR (solo voice also in "Ave Maria" and "Dio Tu Sei") lends an uncommon force to a minimal track (piano, guitar, cello). "Gloria Dal Basso Della Terra", in 5/4 a "Gloria" with an atypical adaptation that with it's voices and instruments recalls South America. "Alleluja per il si", a canon for a two-voice chorus and for orchestra... Each track is a surprise, in the lyrics, in the composition, in the arrangements, in the performances and in the production that blends the entire work. An original and surprising opera studied on purpose for the liturgy, but then it overtakes itself becoming the music of that world that searches and doubts, discusses and quarrel, even with God. The opera "Dal Basso Della Terra" is dedicated to John Paul II not just because of his being Pontiff but because of his loving God and the people, those people that "From the low of the earth" make efforts to give a precise signal by asserting their existence, their love and dignity before their rights.
