Nook is a Brooklyn-based band that got it's name from playing their first show in a tiny record store. The members of the band were brought together through their mutual involvement in the New York City improvised music world. What began as a largely improvisational group has grown into a unique compositional approach that crosses genre barriers and incorporates the wide-ranging playing experience and musical interests in the band. Nook's sound draws from the diverse musical landscape of New York City, especially the vibrant music scene in Brooklyn, and freely makes use of experimental/post-rock, free improvisation, Balkan folk music, atmospheric ambient noise, funk, and tightly structured composition. Nook seeks to make creative and original music that is also accessible and fun and appeals to a non-jazz/experimental music audience. In 2007 Nook was invited to perform at the Festival of New Trumpet Music, a festival curated by jazz trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas. In 2008, Nook recorded their debut CD 'Captain Momentum (Himself)' which has since been nominated in the 9th Annual Independent Music Awards for Eclectic album of the year. The band has performed to equal acclaim in rock and jazz venues in the New York area. Nook has shared the stage with renowned jazz artists Ralph Alessi and Ben Monder, as well as with indie rock bands like Skeleton Breath, Stats, and Yukon. The members of Nook are active in many areas of the New York music scene and have performed with such artists as The Walkmen, Bing and Ruth, Slavic Soul Party, Tim Berne, John Hollenbeck, Steve Lehman, and many more.
