My father is a principled man; A Scots-Irish folk/blues/bluegrass musician who couldn't support his family with music and got a "real job" (or jobs). My mother is a political activist and poet in the Russian Jewish tradition. She's spent 30 years as a clerk in hospitals while working towards world and community justice here in Oakland, CA. I grew up in the middle of rehearsals and meetings, concerts and demonstrations; understanding that the most important parts of us don't necessarily make us money but are still essential for our survival. I was born in 1971, moved to Oakland in '76 and was surrounded by music: Old Staple singers and Buck Owens from pops; Pete Seeger and Mercedes Sosa from my mom; And Oakland bumping Sly Stone, Tower of Power, eventually Too Short... Music is our support, cultural communicator, creative release, and inspiration. I'm interested in any music that tells our story and pushes humanity forward - but definitely tend towards dirty bass lines and gloomy melodies. I'm the owner and operator of a one truck moving company based in Oakland. I never could have put in 15 years as a mover without music. A couple years after starting the business, I bought a computer to keep records etc. Soon after, I got a pirated music-production program, and started trying to make the music in my head. Eventually, I began writing words to it. babysteps is made up of the songs I like best from the music I've made over the last 3 years. With limited - but growing - skills and support from talented friends, I've tried to get feelings across without worrying too much about technique. I'm proud to be part of an emerging arts-activist collective called the Electric Vandals. The Vandals promote unity through mixed arts productions. A modern dance show with a rap group, a local arts slide show in the background and, somehow, it all works. At it's best, art is our connection to God. We should all be involved.
