Seattle Blues on CD

CD-Program Notes: As we look back at the muti-faceted history of Jazz, we discover an Afro-American tradition which eventually blossomed into an international language. 'Jelly Roll' Morton claimed to have invented it in New Orleans; Willey 'The Lion' Smith said that it came from the New York brick yards. W.C.Handy's popular St. Louis Blues swept the country and began a rapid transition from Ragtime to Jazz. While Handy did not invent Jazz, he introduced the concept of the Blues as a harmonic framework in which to improvise. The true story of Jazz is much more complex. On this CD you'll hear many rare transcriptions of piano rolls and original recordings. Among other showstoppers, fingerbusters, and ivory ticklers, is Tatum's version of 'Tea For Two' which intimidated the great Russian virtuoso Vladimir Horowitz to the extent that Horowitz never played his own version again in public! My own composition 'Seattle Blues,' was dedicated to Dick Spady, Dick's drive-In Restaurants, and the Dicks-i-land project, which sponsors benefit concerts for the Kursk (Russian) Regional Children's Hospital, the Seattle Child- ren's Hospital, and Regional Medical Center in Tacoma, WA..
