Curtains on CD

Curtains, the full-length solo debut by Miika Grady, is a blend of delicately intricate songwriting supported by electronically-styled rhythms and samples to create an album that speaks subtly of love and loss. Grady integrates the influence of longtime electronic favorites like Underworld, Bjork, and Meat Beat Manifesto with concise acoustic songwriting and analog sounds, but the result of this recording, strangely, is more akin to a sound that anyone familiar with The Cure, Nick Drake and The Smiths will recognize. Written in the wake of two lost relationships and the demise of his band, Sidedoor Johnnies (Mercury Records) after a record deal gone sour, the album lyrically confronts the risks of trying to hold onto lost love and the fears found in trying to pick up the pieces. Demos for the album were completed in January 2001 and produced by musical partner, and trusted confidant, Mike Skinner. Skinner and Grady collaborated to create lush soundscapes that blossom with candid confessions suspended over haunting textures and melodies. Grady is just as comfortable with a sequencer as he is with a guitar, and whether the song features live drums or electronic they are well tended to. The album finds a perfect balance for blending melody with discord as well as the digital with the acoustic. Curtains is all about intimacy; from the warm vocals and melodies of tracks like 'Noticed' to the electronic styled beats of 'Lullaby' the album absorbs the listener from start to finish.
