- Release Date:11/6/2007
The Main Street Players stake their alternative/funk/rock approach to songwriting as group since July of 2006. Tipping thier hat to Classic Rock, Funk and Blues Main Street's roots grow in Indie/Alternative soil giving an inspired outcome of hook phrasing and dynamic song structures. The four members consist of Jason Smith on lead Vocals and Jeff Frey on Guitar, Moses Martinez on Drums and the final element Dave Featherston on Bass. The group finished thier first recording at Nacnud sound August 1st 2007. Melody and Movement was released on October 13th 2007 by MSP's record label RD5 Records. Jeff Frey blends in bold guitar rhythms touched by the timeless hand of rock and roll. You will hear tearing leads at the end of 'Bleed It True' and rhythmic hooks on 'We Will Kill You' that testify his approach. If there is anyone who has heard The Main Street Players and pondered what else is up the sleeve of this group, it is most likely the result of a phrasing created by Jeff Frey. Frey lends in his skills as songwriter throughout all of MSP's works. Jeff also sings backing vocals and plays keys as the music calls for these elements. The usual elements of his influence are of the classics. Jeff draws his music from the vintage stacks and it commonly comes through in his playing. As a founding member of The Main Street Players his playing has become part of the identity of the group. Moses unified The Main Street Players when he joined July of 2006. Contributing all Drum Tracks on Melody & Movement, the finesse and solid playing patterns of Martinez can be heard on all tracks. Determination and endurance are virtues of the active marathon runner and they cross over to his drum playing. 'I've been playing the drums for 6 years now, I've played in two othe bands, Gnosis and Lyniah. I previously worked with Jeff Frey in Lyniah and later regrouped with him for this...good times.', this experience and familiarity introduced Martinez as a natural fit for MSP. He has instinctively matched a natural rythm every time. Moses's influence can be heard throughout the recording of Melody & Movement and he even gave us a list: 'Major drummers who influenced me are: Chad Smith (chili peppers), Danny Carey (tool), Mike Cosgrove (alien ant farm), Animal (muppet babies), Jose Passillas (incubus), Scott Phillips (creed), Josh Freeze(a perfect circle), Jon Theodor (the mars volta), Vinnie Paul (pantera)and the list goes on....but these are the main drummers I listened to in order to get to the level I am at now, meaning I listened to and practiced thier movements.' Jason is a songwriter-guitarist contributing Lead Vocals to The MSP project. An admirer of simple songs with exaggerated dynamics, Jason has adapted this as an approach to songwriting and in exapmle, can be heard on songs like MSP, Bleed it True and The Consumer (pre release 2006). The Vocals on Melody & Movement comprise Smith's first professional vocal tracks, 'Working in the studio with Rick has strengthened my vocals to a new level'. As a lead guitarist Jason uses his technique on MSP, Destination Radio and the 2nd lead on LOL. Past groups include Tantra, Product, G-Spot, Down With the Vibe, Glue Faktre and MyME. Some electronic works produced in 2006 under the the title DJ Funk, without post production efforts can be found online (RD5 Records on myspace) Without a bassist The Main Street Players started onto the music scene from July of 2006. In August of 07 when Dave Featherston joined, The Main Street lineup was complete. Dave brought his skill to the table adapting bass lines for the twenty song MSP library. As a yoga instructor, Featherstons open approach and connectivity is a added benfit to the group and brings an entirely new element. The addition of this integral element has surfaced a new level of potential for the band. In 1998 Jeff Frey and Jason Smith met in a sectioned out Band Rental Warehouse (an old retired Ice House from the 50's) on Main St. In Lodi Ca. Jeff at the time working with Product (Devin Fox, Charles Taramina and Chris Schnell) and Jason with Tantra (Dwayne Vogt, Dave Sumner and John Price). The two groups rented sections in one of the only places available for bands to rent and rehearse in Lodi. Tantra and Product held local shows performing together based out of the Icehouse in the Tantra practice room which was converted to an underground local venue with absolutely no legal buisness doing so. Some recordings exist from 98 to 05 with Jeff and Jason working together and apart on different projects. In the Winter of 2005 Jeff and Jason recognized common interests in songwriting and home studio song production and began songwriting together. Several recordings and concepts that never recieved post production efforts later The Main Street Players were born with the union of Moses Martinez in the Summer of 2006. The next year sent MSP into a series of rehearsals and live shows that led to the making of what would be MSP's first 10 song LP 'Melody & Movement'. After four months of recording and mixing at Nacnud Sound, The Main Street Players were joined by Bassist Dave Featherston thus completing The Main Street Players in August 07.
