Musical Chairs on CD

The second CD from LA's Loverlee is more of what you love. 10 new tracks (and one remix) of organic indie pop, folk, and everything inbetween. Loverlee is made up of five people and a whole lot of instruments- a mix of traditional (guitars, keyboard), "kid" toys (casios, whistles, a junior drumset), and band class hand-me-downs (mandolin, flute, upright bass). The result is collection of songs melding many genres that come off as organic, fun, and uplifting. Brought together in late 2005 by Justin Riner, whom the LA Times said "plays musical mad scientist" (Buzz Bands, March 2002), Loverlee brings a down-to-earth and light-hearted sound to the overly product conscious LA music scene. Jason Krane (guitar, bass, mandolin), Lauren Brooks (keyboard, guitar), Genevieve Kwong (keyboard, bass, flute), and Valerie Ngai (upright and electric bass, drums) join Riner (drums, guitar, accordion) to create a feeling of familiarity and spontaneity by dipping into a larger variety of sounds than most bands and then extending the sound further by trading duties often. "Our sharing of instruments and lead vocals makes for a true group feel and avoids the doldrums of the same fingers on the same instruments through a whole set. This gives each song it's own feel and distinctive vibe," Krane reflected. Kwong agreed, "It keeps the show from being about one person. Things don't get stagnant on stage and we're able to use each members' strengths as they apply to each song." Having set out inspired by other ensemble bands like Tilly and The Wall, Camera Obscura, The Arcade Fire, The Concretes, and Belle and Sebastian, Loverlee melds organic folk, sing alongs, and rock as they also pays homage to influences like Mirah, Eels, and Brian Wilson. Within their first year as a band, Loverlee was included in the LA Times Annual Local Music Report, selected as a featured band on the debut of Alterntv. Tv, played on a wide array of college radio stations, and opened the Knitting Factory Mainstage for Imperial Teen and Donita Sparks of L7. To celebrate their second anniversary, Loverlee is releasing their second CD, the eleven track "Musical Chairs." The ten new tracks and one remix of organic indie pop, folk, and everything in between is more of what Loverlee's fans have come to expect but with a new broadness that will capture a new audience. Their wide range of abilities, unique instrumentation, and the organic sound of the band creates broad appeal, greeting audiences with encompassing lyrics and stage persona. Loverlee is, all at the same time, unique and comfortably familiar.
