Labo_Labs is the signature under which Cristian Huepe develops his music projects as an electronic musician and a theoretical physicist; performing, creating, and researching both fields in parallel. Cristian Huepe grew up in Chile and later lived for six years in Paris, where he obtained his PhD in physics and released his first full LP album: ECLECTISE. Cristian now lives in Chicago, where he currently spend half of his time carrying out research in nonlinear science, statistical physics, and complexity, supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation; and half of his time working in music, developing various projects, including the Labo Labs live-electronic-music-show and the Makers of Sense and Metamann/Labo_Labs collaborations. The music of Labo_Labs is defined as pointful and organic, in contrast to the many formulistic sounds that are created following pre-programmed trends, presets and gadgets. Labo_Labs intends to create virtual musical landscapes that exist in a different universe, which contain logical and emotional structures based on the same principles, while not necessarily on the same rules, as the ones of our world. Cristian's music, however, does not aim to be purely experimental or intellectual. He believes that pointful music must be absorbing, moving and permeate the listeners while challenging their minds with something new and unique, in spite of their rationality. Labo_Labs uses any available tool. Electronic tools are particularly adequate since they allow great flexibility in creating and controlling new entangled sounds, and because Cristian Huepe's scientific background allows him to manipulate intuitively the algorithms that are needed to interact with his machines. The Labo_Labs-electronic-music-show is a live-PA electronic music performance and presented for two hours in an uninterrupted organic, energetic and dance-friendly show. Cristian uses a laptop [with virtual instruments] and machines [keyboard, modules, drum machine, mixing console, sequencer, effects, etc.], but no pre-recorded music and almost no samples. He controls new and pre-developed structures in real-time, dynamically and intuitively by plugging and unplugging connectors and by manipulating knobs, faders, buttons, keys, and a large touch-sensitive semi-transparent-screen. This allows Cristian to generate a non-aseptic electronic music performance by including elements of improvisation, risk, and challenge. Cristian Huepe has been involved in music composition, production and performance for more than fifteen years. He was the leader, singer and bass player of the Chilean Jazz-Punk band Malavida, which was included in a compilation of best emerging bands. Cristian Huepe started making electronic music during his PhD studies in France. From 1997 to 2000, he performed electronic music regularly at lounges, clubs and other venues in Paris. During that time, he also released an electronic music EP and scored an experimental video by dancer/trapezist Sandrine Rouxel, which was first presented at the Art and Body exhibit in Milan. In 1999, he composed and produced a track for the magazine 9/9 - Practical Art Review, which was featured in the Pro-Zak exhibit at the Modern Art Museum of Paris. Cristian later started the collaboration The Makers of Sense with hip-hop artist/producer Brother El, together with my current live-electronic-music-show.
