Colorado Colors on CD

Eric Karlstrom and Karen Fricke of Kindred Folk grew up in the Karlstrom family in Arlington, Virginia. They began singing together in the early 60's, when folk music was sweeping the nation. Groups like Peter, Paul and Mary and the Kingston Trio provided the inspiration and model for their songs, arrangements and harmonies. Eric started singing and playing guitar at the age of thirteen and Karen, who is four years younger, started singing with him soon thereafter. They sang at family gatherings, while Eric formed little folk combos with his friends in the neighborhood and began writing his own songs. By the middle 70's, Eric was learning to play the bluegrass banjo. By 1976, Karen had landed a job as an elementary school teacher in Grand Junction, Colorado. She got married and started a family, while Eric pursued graduate studies in Geography at the University of Wyoming (M.A. degree) and The University of Calgary (Ph.D.). During the 70's, 80's, and 90's, while Karen taught, raised kids, and rode horses, Eric played in various bluegrass bands and taught himself to play the piano. During this time, Eric and Karen did not play music together very often. Today, Eric teaches geography at the California State University, Stanislaus but spends as much time as possible at the home he built in Crestone, Colorado. In the year 2000, over 35 years after they started singing together, Eric and Karen decided to record some of their favorite songs at Don Richmond's Howlin' Dog Recording Studio in Alamosa, Colorado. First, they recorded Eric and Karen: "Finding Home" and then, Kindred Folk: "Colorado Colors". Recording engineer and talented mulit-instrumentalist, Don Richmond added accompaniment on several instruments, including bass, mandolin, fiddle, and accordion. Eric and Karen have enjoyed the musical journey, having performed numerous times in Crestone and Grand Junction, Colorado and at the Crestone Music Festival.
