Good Alien on CD

Karmen Buttler is an accomplished singer-songwriter from San Francisco, a skilled guitarist, with a rich voice. Her songs invoke a timelessness and simplicity, and her unassuming melodies ease their way into your memory. Karmen is a Bay Area native, raised in Oakland and Sacramento by a very musical family. She began studying flute at age 9 and then began studying guitar with her father at age 12. In 1998 she attended Mills College in Oakland, where she first began singing. A literary major, her poignant and intriguingly enigmatic lyrics and exceptional guitar playing immediately drew people into the world of her songs. She performed live for the first time in \'99 at Mills. Karmen put college on hold and moved to Charlottesville Va. to record Good Alien which was released in early 2000. Including Cassanova, Low and Another Round, this album has a polished and unique sound created through working closely with Lauren Hoffman and other talented studio artists including Karmen\'s dad, Dan Buttler, whose intricate guitar leads were woven into several tunes on the album. After the release of Good Alien, Karmen toured nationally and internationally with throughout 2000-2002, including noteworthy performances in France and the UK, New York\'s Mercury Lounge and San Francisco\'s Cafe DuNord. Upon returning she settled into Charlottesville\'s vibrant music scene, quickly becoming a local favorite. With help from artist manager Chris Tetzelli of ATO records and musictoday.com, she had the pleasure of opening for established touring acts like Patty Griffin and Dar Williams. In 2004, the 10,000 oceans EP was recorded at Sandalwoods Studio in Charlottesville. This authentically bare recording features a selection of mature songs in which Karmen\'s seasoned vocals and effortless guitar are perfectly captured. Featuring crowd favorites like the Lilly Song and Nigerian Moon, this EP is a treasure. After moving to remote Williamstown, Ma. Karmen settled into a brief hibernation period in 2005 and 2006 during which she was still writing regularly and performing in intimate settings. 2007 found Karmen embarking on a cross-country road trip from Williamstown to San Francisco, to return her new/old home. She is thrilled to be back in the Bay Area and is gigging regularly accompanied by her father\'s sweeping guitar ornamentation. There are plans to return to the studio this spring and record with one of Seattle\'s renowned engineers on a long-awaited full-length album.
