Threads of Blue 18 Songs of the Jewish Experience
- (Judith Levy)
- Format: CD
In Numbers 15:38, the Children of Israel are instructed to makes fringes in the borders of their garments as a reminder of the Laws of the Torah. Symbolic blue threads in prayer shawls remind modern Jews of the presence of God. The rich, evocative soprano of Vancouver born Judith Levy (nee Chertkow) reflects the depth and breadth of the music she has performed over her career. Operatically trained in Canada and England, Judith infuses cantorial music with the performance quality of classical Art Songs. With a Sephardic mother and Ashkenazi father, Judith grew up steeped in both Mediterranean and Eastern European Jewish culture and music as well as orthodox religious training. Threads of Blue is a recording of eighteen songs that weave together aspects of Jewish religion, languages, culture and traditions, touching milestones in the Jewish religious calendar and life cycle; Sabbath and High Holidays; love, marriage, birth, death; folk, liturgical and art songs in the hybrid Jewish tongues of Yiddish and Ladino as well as traditional Hebrew.
