Songs I Wish Id Written on CD

ON RECORDING COVER SOGNS: On the one hand, there's no point in recording a cover song if all you're going to do is create a, "clone" of the original recording. If people want to hear that, they can listen to the original record. It only makes sense if you can bring something new to it; breathe some fresh life into it or add some new dimension to it and somehow personalize it so that your version of the song has it's own identity. At the same time, however, I think it's important to remain reverent and faithful to the original recording, and to the writer's original essence and message of the song. It was, after all, written and recorded the way it was for a reason. So it's a bit of a balancing act. This was the starting point from which I approached this record. I decided to stay away from songs, (for the most part,) that were huge commercial hits, and have been recorded many times by many different people. "Hotel California," for example. Don't get me wrong, I love The Eagles. But if I had done an Eagles song, (and I did consider it,) I'd have looked for a more obscure song that we haven't all heard a million times,.. songs that only true, die-hard fans of the Eagles would be likely to know. I did not set out to create, "replacement" versions of any of these songs. I still love the original versions. I just wanted to get people listening to some of them again, possibly in a new way. Maybe after hearing my versions, some people will want to go back and listen to the original versions again. That would please me. I think these songs should last forever. And it doesn't matter who sings them. It's the song, not the singer. JM.
