- Artist: John Lester
- Format: CD
- Release Date:9/25/2001
Album description John Lester 'Live at the Freight and Salvage Coffee House' Not intending to record a CD on this evening in March 2001, this performance was captured by soundman Lou Judson on digital tape from the Freight and Salvage mixing console. After people started hearing the tape, requests for copies came in and thus 'Live at the Freight and Salvage' was mastered and released as a CD (August 2001). Lester starts the show with his unique bass and vocal solo performances playing both upright bass and fretless electric bass. He is later joined by saxophonist Bob Johnson, percussionist Paulo Baldi, electric bassist Kenon Chen, pianist Nyree, and percussionist Celso Alberty for duets and ensemble pieces that range from folk, to jazz, to world music influences. Two of the songs on this live recording were awarded 'Song of the Year' from the West Coast Songwriter's Association: 'The Ways of a Woman' (1999) and 'Both a Blessing and a Curse' (2001). With the release of his debut studio CD 'Big Dreams and the Bottom Line' (August 2003), this record still remains the place to find many audience favorites including the whimsical 'I Like Brunettes' and the powerful encore 'They Come and They Go'.
