On the Swing Shift on CD

Joe Kingston performed with the jazz band on board the S.S. Independence. The group was a comfortable combination of musicians. Feeling that the music should be recorded for a wider audience, Joe got the band into the studio. This CD is a result of their collaboration. ******** On April 20,2001, John Berger, music critic for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, wrote: Swing is the thing for singer Joe Kingston in this glorious collection of American pop music classics. Kingston sings with an engaging freshness reminiscent of John Pizzarelli and perhaps a hint of the brashness of a young Tommy Sands. A tight sextet - drums, bass, brass, reeds and piano/keyboads - provides excellent support. On the first listen this is a natural pick for romantics. The order of the songs makes it promising dance party material as well. Kingston follows 'Route 66' with a swinging arrangement of 'Fly Me to the Moon' before slipping into 'Twilight Time.' He and the combo vary the tempos nicely thereafter. Dropping the horn section on two tunes adds a smooth lounge ambience to the set. If there are occasional hints of rawness, they add to the emotional authenticity of Kingston's overall performance. He and his band do a fine job throughout. ******** In October of 2001, SPOTLIGHT'S MAUI GOLD said: ... Kingston handles twelve lounge standards with the debonair attitude of those famous young crooners of yesteryear. Recorded on Maui, 'On the Swing Shift' is beautifully mixed and arranged with just the right amount of instrumentation to accentuate Kingston's vocals. It's a great CD for beginning swing dancers with tracks such as 'Beyond the Sea.' It also has an intimate feel for cheek-to-cheek dancing on songs like 'The Nearness of You' and 'East of the Sun.'
