Feels Like Home

Was it the reaction seven year old Jean Gauthier received after singing "Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle", in her grandmother's kitchen, that launched her love of performing? Perhaps, because at the age of ten, she began singing in her church choir in Central New York. From her high school chorus and drama years, to her performances in college and community theater, Jean's love for the arts continued. Her musical career began as the lead singer in the New York based band, Samara. She then worked as a solo act in coffeehouses, clubs, and concerts--her rich contralto serving as a springboard to showcase her unique versatility of style and range. In 1975, Jean moved to Boston, appearing in New England-area coffeehouses, including Maxine Feldman's Oasis and the Sword in the Stone. In 1985, while in her last semester at Boston's Berklee College of Music, Jean arranged the music for, and performed in Tom Wilson Weinberg's acclaimed "Ten Percent Revue". In the '90s, while performing with the women's Afro/Brazilian based percussion group, the Batucada Belles, Jean teamed up with fellow percussionist, Laura Ruth Jarrett, to form the musical duo, Mahogany Moon. Jean ushered in her debut CD, Yours In Spirit, in the fall of 1998. She was joined on the CD by area artists, Steve Sadler, Paul Kochanski (The Swinging Steaks), Hanneke Cassel, Deb Blackadar, and Mandana Azar. Yours In Spirit is a revealing compilation of original folk, country and blues all written by Jean. Currently, Jean has completed Feels Like Home, which was co-produced with North Carolina musician/engineer, Fran McKendree. Performing on the CD are Catherine Marx, Kerry Marx, Fran McKendree (McKendree Spring), Grammy winner, Eliot Wadopian, River Guerguerian, Stephanie Morgan and Sarah McDonald. Feels Like Home is a lively blend of blues, jazz standards, and gospel. Some of the songs are Jean's originals and some are well-loved cover tunes such as My Funny Valentine, People Get Ready, and Amazing Grace. Whether she's covering one of the blues, jazz or folk tunes in her current repertoire or performing an original piece, Jean's soulful voice will take you by surprise and move you.
