Mek Man on CD

This is A.J. McMahon's first solo release, and it is clear that he has the talent and experience of a well seasoned musician. In fact, his forty plus years of working in the music business should garner instant respect. But listen to his music and let it be the proof. A.J.'s music career began in the early '60s, and with it came a good deal of traveling and encounters with musicians who are some of the most admired today (Otis Redding...Albert King). This was the period of time when A.J. built the foundation of his playing style. The '70s brought even more traveling and, again, associations with musicians and acts of great renown. It was during this decade that A.J. played keyboards in the group Mother Earth and also worked with Boz Skaggs. Madison Square Garden, Shea Stadium, Carnegie Hall, Fillmore East and West, Town Hall, the Great American Music Hall and the Beacon Theatre are just some of the venues he played. A.J. also worked on many recording sessions and played keys on albums of such artists as J.J. Cale, Waylon Jennings, Neil Young, Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffett. And of the many albums he played on, fourteen of them went gold and platinum. He worked with producer George Martin at his Montserrat Air Studio, and at other studios like Muscle Shoals Sound, Criteria, Fame and Bearsville Studio. Songwriting became a big part of A.J.'s life in the '80s. And through that decade and the next, artists like Tracy Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, Maria Muldaur, Phoebe Snow, Sherman Robertson, Vince Gill, Dawn Sears, Kenny Neal and Jack Pearson recorded his songs. Released in 1998, 'MEK MAN' is an album of bluesy Louisiana Bayou funk originals. The lyrics are sophisticated, even when they're sung in Spanish or chanted in Haitian Creole. Percussionists add Latin and African rhythms to a classy gumbo. The CD features Jack Pearson (Allman Brothers Band) on guitar and Nanette Bohannon on vocals. 'MEK MAN' is a combination of styles and influences, each with a debt to the other. It is an hour of diverse music with great continuity. 'MEK MAN' is a journey. From South Chicago to the Florida Gold Coast. To Louisiana and Little Havana with a stop on a beach in between. There's Memphis, Atlanta and Muscle Shoals. It's got block house bars and smoky cafès. Melting pot places, love, loss and triumph. It is driving music in a sense. Sit back, let it play, and go where it takes you. 'a combination of jazz and blues, tasty keyboards, a touch of the bayou and a big dose of Jack Pearson's guitar...This stellar CD has it all---great vocals, first-rate instrumentation and a diverse musical selection.' Hittin' the Note Magazine 'a fine album of all original material...of what I would call bluesy Louisiana Bayou Funk. These laid back grooves really give you time to contemplate his picturesque lyrics, and imagine yourself floating thru the mysterious evening haze of a cypress swamp.' Jazz & Blues News 'tasteful keyboard playing, soulful songwriting and laid back voice...full of different flavors of music such as rhythm & blues, jazz and Latin.' Murfreesboro Sun.
