Mood Ring on CD

'I guess you might describe it as ethereal, heady mood-rock,' responds j.d. when pressed to describe his intense brand of guitar-enriched songs. 'That's why 'Mood Ring' seemed like an appropriate title. I was attempting to explore a wide range of emotions--from low-down, kill-yourself depression to extreme bliss.' With a vocal style reminiscent of Nick Drake, Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley, j.d. also has a unique guitar style, incorporating rich, ambient effects into his shimmering 12-string soundscapes. So where does this j.d. guy come from anyway? Originally from Maryland ('I also lived in Europe for a few years. I bought my first guitar in London when I was 13'), j.d. came to New York in 1990 and has played at the CMJ Music Marathon, CB's Gallery, the Darkstar Lounge and CAMI Hall. He also performed an experimental guitar piece at Harvard University's Paine Hall and is a member of the irreverent Ween-meets-Zappa band Glued For Thought. As for 'Mood Ring,' his haunting new album, j.d. introduces richly arranged songs like 'In My Bed,' a dreamy ride through the trials of insomnia; 'Euphoria,' an ebullient tale of head-over-heels lust and 'Open Up,' an Afro-pop-inspired jam. As for major influences, j.d. cites 5 artists: Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, Marisa Monte and Led Zeppelin. 'Their music is like an epiphany. I'd love to be able to approach sound in a similar way.'
