Footprints on CD

Ian re-entered the music industry in 2000 after a lengthy break concentrating on triathlon. With the 'shaved leg thing' now all but a fond memory he has concentrated on developing his song writing. Ian was classically trained on guitar although that style of play does not emerge at all in his songs. He has influenced by more relaxed acoustic artists such as Shawn Mullins, David Gray, Tracy Chapman, Jack Johnson and John Mayer. Ian is always impressed by articulate lyrics and it is an area in his writing that receives a lot of attention. 'Footprints' is Ian's fourth album and for the first time he has called upon other musicians to join him on the project. Neville Dowling on keyboards played a big part in putting some meat on the skeletons and helping blending the colours before they dried. Nevy D has a wonderful feel and picks up on the song's nuances instantly and is such a relaxed guy to work with,' says Ian. 'We do a fair amount of gigs together and it is inspiring to play in this stress free environment.' Guy Slingerland (Slandman) features on drums and adds a particular flavour with his craftsmanship. 'Guy is amazing to watch and that is why we recorded him live. He just put on the headphones and climbed right in. My only regret is that he does not live a bit closer (Guy is in Fremantle and we are 200km south in Bunbury) so that we could work together more often. But when we all meet up (performing under the name Frenzodez) it feels right.' David Papendorf (an old school buddy, band member and 'brother' from South Africa) plays the instrumental on 'Mr Misunderstood'. 'I sent the wave files over to Dave in Johannesburg and he came up with this amazing guitar solo. It hits the spot every time I listen to it. Wow,' says Ian. 'Footprints' is recorded with a natural raw feel that almost places Ian and Friends in your lounge room. 'I don't ever want to lose that crisp, spacious feel and be drawn into over production,' says Ian. 'Nevy D is on the same level and we'll keep chipping away at our sound and see what happens. The main thing is we're having fun.' Ian Cocker performs currently in Bunbury and the South West at local restaurants, wineries and pubs.
