Whatever It Takes on DVD

Heather Schmid's life embodies a duality. She is living a pop star life- traveling, touring, press events, photo shoots, studio time, writing sessions, dance rehearsals, doing interviews, shooting her music video, commercial contracts and business decisions. She records music with internationally acclaimed producers during the day, and then attends major press events in the evening in New York City. She is photographed many evenings a week dressed in major designers with perfected makeup and hair. Fans rush to ask for her autograph. The duality is that she is not famous. She just fits the mold. And she accomplished all of this on her own, with her eyes clearly set on her goal. Heather frames her career by a mentality gained training in opera for college. 'An opera singer in order to be successful has to be incredible disciplined, focused and have attention to detail. I had none of these qualities! I had to gain them through my drive to achieve something, and through the belief that I had a voice that could compete with the best of them.' She did compete-She won many classical competitions and traveled Europe as a soloist during a summer away from college. After graduating from the School of Music at Boston University in 2000, Heather was expected to devote her life to classical music. She worked hard to develop her 3 and 1/2 octave range as a lyric soprano soloist, learned piano well, and performed many roles in operas throughout Boston and New England. Her vocal coach and teachers had great expectations for her talents in the classical realm. Heather had another very clear focus: to take her skills to a wider audience. The same weekend as her graduation, Heather traveled with a good friend to Las Vegas to compete in the national pageant 'Miss Millennium'. Expected just a weekend of fun in Vegas, Heather shocked the other 199 participants and herself by landing the crown. She won a national tour which she turned into a showcase of her self penned, quickly produced pop/dance CD 'Heather'. That CD went on to sell 30,000 CD's nationally. 'That CD was never meant for such a wide audience. I am happy how it sold, and I think it was more the strength of the show than the strength of the songs. I had a lot to learn with songwriting and production.' That learning experience came when she caught the attention of Ed Bennett, acclaimed producer and founder of VH1. We collaborated for 8 months and came up with really original music. 'My writing was finally at a place I felt proud of. I had experiences to write about, and a clear purpose of what I wanted to say. I wanted our album to be a pop mainstream album that had a message through the whole album. I spoke to teens and pre-teens across the country at my shows. I noticed how the society's demands on their outer beauty and boy-craziness were messing up their head. I wanted to write about girl-power in a way that girls could take lessons for their own life.' Heather grew up near Hartford, Connecticut. Her professional modeling experience, eight years of dance, and television and music-video credits not only gave her confidence in her developing abilities, but also an increasing awareness and understanding of the entertainment industry itself. As a lyrically based singer-songwriter, Heather has been strongly influenced by the many multi-cultural influences in her day-to-day life. Travel to Sri Lanka and Pakistan have also provided her with a wealth of incredible experiences, and together these qualities have all combined to help Heather develop a keen understanding of herself, both as a modern young woman, and as an intensely deep and driven artist with a global outlook.
