Tom Paines Blues on CD

'These are the times that try men's souls' - The American Crisis, 1776. Probably the best-known saying of Thomas Paine, and as relevant today as it was then - as is he! His remarkable pamphlet, Common Sense, is credited with unifying the colonies and influencing the Second Continental Congress to declare independence from Britain. Tom Paine's original and courageous thought was the foundation of the American Revolution, as well as the French Revolution. He placed the greatest emphasis on democracy, he sought to abolish monarchy, inherited privilege and the abuse of power, he was an early abolitionist and proponent of women's rights, morality in public life, progressive taxation, pensions, in short - equality, justice and liberty for all. Tom Paine's brave spirit has been our muse for this album, which is our answer to the current political climate, with it's attack on our civil liberties and pre-emptive war tactics. Music has traditionally been a big part of humanity's most important struggles. Protest and topical songs inspire us to action, teach us, bring us together, remind us of our common dreams, our common humanity. In these times, when free speech has been called unpatriotic, when many are afraid to speak or act on their consciences, to criticize and protest the government and it's actions, then protest music becomes more important than ever. Graham and Barbara Dean are a husband-and-wife duo who, having raised four children, are turning their energies towards their passion and love for folk music and for political justice and peace. Graham has written many songs, and we are so happy now to be performing and recording them - this is our first CD, and we hope to be able to continue on this musical adventure together for a long time to come.
