Casio Tapes on CD

Fran first collaborated with her older brother Seth at a Casio keyboard when she was only 7. They wrote funny songs and made mixed tapes of their creations. But the siblings grew in very different directions musically: Fran pursued musical theater up until college, and Seth became a heavy metal artist. Needless to say, both had to go on quite a funky journey until they could make music together again. It was not until the age of 22 that Fran started to take her songwriting seriously and learn the guitar to move the process along. She turned in her tap shoes, quit musical theater and was off to find her own voice. Fran played some covers at bars during college, but it was not until she graduated and moved to Boston that the songs started flowing out of her. She wrote the entire album in about two months. Seth lived near Boston and was surviving a musical creative drought after writing, producing, and mixing three of his own solo albums. He was ready to try recording something different. By November 2004, the project was under way and a whole new sound began to blossom through the collaboration of the Betlyon siblings. Seth came from a more heavy metal and electronic musical background than Fran, and helped to add layers and funky sounds and beats to her pop, folk tunes. The outcome was interesting, accessible, and different. The album debuted at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge Ma, March 2006 with an assembled band of Fran on guitar, her old best mate, Matt Burwell on drums, and her theater buddy Justin Dilley on keys. The band has not played together since, despite a wonderful turnout and audience. Fran is back doing musicals, so who knows what the future of "The Casio Tapes" will be. It deserves to be heard.
