Fold : Envy EP on CD

The Fold are a three-piece band from Edinburg, Texas. ENVY is their debut EP for Nervous Fish Records. Envy contains three original songs (the fourth song is an acoustic version of the title track) that are both painfully passionate and sonically dense. Frontman Matt Rios wrote and sang about the pain of being in a relationship that he fears would be even more painful to be out of. Guitarist/Bassist Estevan Alfaro and Drummer J.J. Fernandez are there supplying the instrumental drive that ranges from quiet and clean to loud and distorted with very little segue between the two. The story of this band unfolds (pun intended) with Estevan Alfaro and Matt Rios meetting in the 8th grade in 1998. Estevan had just bought his first guitar and was teaching himself to play with on the job training in a 3-piece punk cover band. Matt had been singing most of his life and naturally joined the high school choir. Fast-forward to 2000, the guys are now in 10th grade. Estevan is playing in another cover band. While looking for a singer, Estevan remembers Matt. He is brought in and everyone agrees that he has a great voice and becomes their vocalist. Matt gets his first taste of the stage but is kicked out of the band due to creative differences. Estevan, feeling that Matt was treated unfairly, decides to leave the band as well. Matt starts singing in a band that consists of Matt on vocals & guitar,Angel Montoya on bass and J.J. Fernandez on drums. When not holed up in Angel's garage (practicing with the band), Matt would get together and jam with Estevan. After one jam session, Matt invited Estevan to sit in on their band practice. The guys ask him to join in on a few songs and were immediately impressed. He was then asked to join the band. This was the beginning of what is now The Fold. However, at the time, they went by the unlikely name 'Super Hero Lunchbox.' After practicing for months, learning a few covers, trying their hand at a few originals, and changing their name a few times, they play at a Teachers Academy battle of the bands. Excitement filled the building as The Fold played to a packed house and took home 1st place, beating out bands that had been together longer. At the beginning of 2002, plans were being made for their first recordings. Eddie Alfaro (Estevan's brother) was putting together a home studio to record bands for his newly formed Nervous Fish Records. The band convinced Eddie to let them be their first project. The Envy EP resulted from these recording. Everything was beginning to fall into place, when the band was hit with some unexpected news. Angel, due to his family moving to Chicago, would be leaving the band. The guys found themselves in a tight spot, but fueled with ambition, decide to move on with the recording process. After having a bass player and a second guitarist fill in during the first recording session, the band found themselves as a three piece band. Entering the studio whenever possible, they finished the 4-song EP with Estevan pulling double-duty as guitarist and bass player. The Fold are doing live shows with a guest bass player and have begun writing new material for a full length CD (with Eddie Alfaro producing and engineering). **IMPORTANT UPDATE** The Fold have recently had a change in it's line-up and is currently recording a full-legnth album with producer/engineer Eddie Alfaro. This will be released spring 2004.
