For a brief period, Edward the Bear were the Great White Hope of Florida's underground (deep underground) 60s pop revival. After releasing a brace of EPs and singles on hometown imprint Gainesville FL's Sloth Bear Records, Inc (Simple Songs is a compilation of these releases), the boys, led by mercurial crooner and guitarist George Papanikos, toured across the United States, lighting their Bacharach-meets-Arthur-Lee compositions with New Wave spark (and then quite often pouring French liqueurs on the flame). Their records were similarly off-kilter affairs, highlighted by lyrics vacillating between defiance and self-defeat, ambitious lo-fi arrangements and campy production touches. Papanikos disbanded the group in the summer of 2003, after releasing a farewell single featuring a new line-up.
