Back to My Father's House on CD

WHO IS DONOVAN ALEXANDER? Donovan Alexander was only eleven years old when he started writing songs. He wrote the lyrics and the melody but was unable to read music or play a musical instrument for many years to follow. At the age of twenty one he found someone who taught him the basics of playing piano and reading music. Later he went for lessons with Trevor Ray Parker (Sr.) who is currently his music director. Donovan started his musical career by playing in the local church band which he still supports. He has recently released his first solo album: Back to my Fathers house. Donovan was blessed to have musical influence in his youth as both his parents sang in church. Apart from his parents Donovan was inspired by the likes of Lionel Richie, Billy Joel, Elton John, Bruce Hornsby and James Ingram. "I think Lionel Richie is one of the most prolific songwriters/producers/singers of our time and James Ingram is a phenomenal singer." says Donovan. Being a Gospel singer Donovan notes that, "Secular music is often a controversial topic in Christian circles. I guess one has to stay grounded in one's faith and have a proper perspective on things. I believe there are many beautiful songs that are sincere and deal with relationships between family and friends, our environment and God." His favourite Gospel group is undoubtedly The Winans. Other favourites are Fred Hammond, Yolanda Adams, Richard Smallwood, Hezekiah Walker and Ray Boltz plus traditional Gospel music such as Hymns, Negro Spirituals and Afrikaans Koortjies. Donovan grew up in a Christian home; his father is a retired pastor. Donovan is a quiet person; however he has decided not to let shyness stand in the way of his dedication to his music. Donovan emphasises the words of Nelson Mandela: "We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world."
