Three Piece Flute on CD

The Three Piece Flute - ' ...a dazzling display of virtuosity and quirky genius...' In Dublin Magazine. Who is Desi Wilkinson? Desi is mostly an Irish Traditional musician but he has eclectic tastes in music and plays a variety of instruments in addition to flute . He is a leading exponent of the flute ('the timber flute') and a fine singer, to boot. He has recorded 4 albums with Cran, his primary musical group, and 2 solo albums as well- of which this album is the first one. His most recent recording (Buffalo in the Castle, July 2009) also features Mairtin O'Connor, Frank Hall and Lena Ulman. Originally from Belfast, Desi has worked and toured with most of the best-known musicians and groups on the traditional Irish music scene, like Dé Dannan, Donal Lunney, Liam O'Flynn, Máirtín O' Connor and Andy Irvine. He toured the U.S.A. as guest star with De Dannan and has arranged and performed music for the theatre. From 1992 - 1994 he lived in Britanny, learning, playing and studying Breton music. Desi, who speaks French fluently, holds a Phd in ethnomusicology and currently teaches at ICMUS, University of Newcastle upon Tyne U.K. 'Desi Wilkinson is one of our finest musicians, his playing of dance music has a rhythmic, emphatic style based on the Sligo-Leitrim tradition. He is an articulate and humorous presenter of the music...deeply committed to exploring genres and traditions beyond Ireland. If traditional music is about searching, absorption, retention and change, so is Desi.'
