Passion Voyage on CD

David Hitchings is pleased to announce the release of Passion Voyage, his first solo CD. David, who currently resides in the picturesque mountain community of Crestline, California (near Lake Arrowhead), grew up playing drums in big bands at Hemet High School, Fullerton College, and Bill Yeager's LA Jazz Workshop. He now makes his living freelancing as a professional drummer throughout Southern California. David has played with many well-known artists, including Louise Baranger, Pete Christlieb, Carl Fontana, Rob McConnell, Lanny Morgan, Frank Sinatra Jr., and a brief tour with the Woody Herman Orchestra in 1988. Passion Voyage is a compilation of eleven original instrumentals in a variety of styles, and features David at the keyboard. 'Those who know me primarily as a drummer will probably be surprised to learn that this is not a drum CD,' says David, 'although there are some tunes on the album that lean heavily on the percussive side of things. I've been fooling around with the piano for a number of years, although I really don't consider myself a pianist. So I recorded this CD on a keyboard sequencer, which means I was able to play all the instruments myself and do a lot of experimenting. One of the compositions even came from a dream that I had. I get inspired by all kinds of things -- it could be the sound of the instrument as I'm playing it, or a beautiful view, or even a person. As a matter of fact, there are four songs on the album that were written specifically for people I've known that have had a profound impact on my life. And, of course, I'm tremendously inspired by other musicians. My tastes in music range from Pat Metheny to Elton John to Poncho Sanchez to John Williams, and from big band, mainstream jazz and fusion to gospel and contemporary Christian music. And I think the music on this CD reflects that. It's an eclectic project -- there are latin jazz tunes, ballads, smooth jazz/new age things, and even some orchestral pieces with strings and French horns.'
