New Hymn Project on CD

'Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.' Psalm 33:3 The entire Bible admonishes us to sing a new song to the Lord. Christians will never stop writing new songs of worship. For those who would prefer to stay locked into the exact original arrangement of classic hymns, you might be in for a surprise when in heaven new songs of praise to the Lamb will be continuously generated! That said, the ancient hymns contain rich theology that is not always found in modern worship songs. The music of modern worship songs is typically written for contemporary musical tastes; however, one should keep in mind that the classic hymns were also written for musical styles of their time. The downside of classic hymns by today's standards is that they can be repetitious musically (for example, all verses and no choruses). Conversely, modern worship songs can be interesting musically, but repetitious lyrically. I would argue that the original hymn writers and modern worship song writers have very similar objectives and passion for God, but the songs differ because of enormous cultural differences. The impetus of the New Hymn Project was to bring the two groups together. I wrote entirely new choruses to a number of well known hymns, or re-arranged them in order to give them more of a contemporary vibe. I have also included several original modern worship songs, which in the context of this discussion could be called hymns. I hope that you enjoy the experience of this project. After studying the lives of historic hymn writers I have a much greater appreciation for their passion for God and desire to facilitate worship for God's people. If it were not for the cultural differences, I believe that the two groups would be one, and will someday have the opportunity to sing a new song together, to the Lamb!
