David & the Doubleneck Fortunata on CD

Welcome to the latest musical venture by Dave Calabrese It has been an enlightening experience recording and performing with this particular Doubleneck customized by my late cousin Steve Calabrese - A lifelong companion and one of our most ultra creative musicianary travelers. As young teenagers I was always in a state of amazement as Steven traded in his amps and guitars for upgraded models. There they arrived glowing in the summer day light in his living room - A Fender Champ, then Princeton Reverb, Fender Twin Reverb then finally the Acoustic 4 by 10. Commanded by a Univox Strat guitar, the Acoustic amp was placed at the enterance of his garage and blared monstrous echoes off the Continental Rubberworks Factory from across the cinder employee parking lot. I added to the mayhem with a Hagstrom bass as this unequalled slap back engulfed the neighborhood and for a moment these two "small for their age" kids became 12 feet tall! Then the day came for the grand finale. There lying on his brother Gary's bed a card table sized guitar case was opened and behold the mother load - a jaw dropping 1970's Ibanez Doubleneck guitar! The radiating sunlight from chrome hardware and burgundy finish flashed into my awestruck eyes and the aroma of the Gibson aerosol guitar Polish stays with me to this day. As time passed Steve removed the 12 string neck and added a vintage Kramer aluminum 4 string fretless bass, a badass bridge and SG style bass pickups. After being handed the torch; I coped out the headstock of the 6 string and rearranged the tuners for easier access to the first position notes on the fretless. I run the instrument through a custom pedal board where at times improvisation takes place over loops created on the fly. Steven has been the foremost influence on my musical journey and will always have an effect on the expressions played out by my fingers as they flow over the fingerboard. Estaban Circa 76 was created by Steven at around age 15.
