In the Earth on CD

Emerging from the forgotten places of the lower mainland in western Canada comes a band of modest beginnings that takes aim at lofty heights. Crashsite seems to brilliantly combine the normally mutually exclusive pretension of heavy philosophy with the un-pretentious raw power of simple songs that speak to the basic conditions of humanity. Somewhere between the angst of youth, and the objectivism of a life lived, Crashsite's vocal and musical melodies sour with the melancholy and grit of a band with something to say. And they say it loud and without shame. Drawing from a vast array of influences, Crashsite's sound can not be easily identified. It has some of the vague stylistic elements of modern alternative rock, but with the vocal strength and rawness of an early U2. Musically it is rock, true to the bone, and it drives with the power of that simple formula. It also highlights itself with cleverness in style and arrangement that hint at a late Soundgarden, with less of the wild time signatures and dissonance. This record is very accessible musically to most rock fans and will appeal to different people for a number of different reasons. It is the melding of very well known musical sensibilities into a new entity. Crashsite is a melodic Brit band with the aggression of an American band all mixed together into one vision. It does not sound like the standard modern rock radio alternative fair, yet it draws heavily upon many of the same influences borrowed so frequently by other modern bands. This enables Crashsite's sound to remain catchy and accessible to most rock fans, yet original enough to not bore people to tears. In the final analysis one can hear some popular artists hidden away within these songs, but within this the band has succeeded in forging them into something of their own. It is undeniably the songs that drive this record and this group, and really they are what distinguish this band from the multitude. This band is all about their songs, and every aspect of their musicianship on this recording leads us to that conclusion. In the end it is the songs that stand out the most from this band, and not any micro details of technique and style that may surround them.
