Eyesore & Isolation on CD

Cousin Gabriel's sophomore effort shows the band maturing and finding their own sound. Beginning with the bass-heavy, pulsing beauty of 'Welcome to Happiness', this album, much like their debut album 'Wilting Petal Ephiphyte', takes you on a journey through a mix of feelings and emotions. But where 'Wilting Petal' used honest but simplistic songs, 'Eyesore' finds Cousin Gabriel broadening their sound with experimentation, not only with other instruments, but with chord progressions, vocal harmonies and time changes. I wouldn't quite call it Math Rock, but some of the songs lean that way. Of course, there are still haunting, slow songs (Lost in the Present, Sex Disguise), that could thaw the heart of even the coldest humans. And then there's 'Normal' which wouldn't be uncomfotable sitting next to an old Subhumans song, screaming with punk (ish) angst. As always, he lyrics are personal, but not in a sappy, teen heartthrob way, and the varied styles keep it interesting while the melody and intensity keep you singing the songs long after you've turned off the music.
