Cotton Kent was born in Abilene, Kansas and grew up in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D. C. He began playing professionally at age 14, and by 16 was playing with and writing for The Young Moderns, a Washington-area stage band culled from the best local high school musicians. Moving to Phildelphia, Kent joined Elizabeth, which later became Good God, a jazz-rock fusion band that recorded for Atlantic and opened for such artists as Weather Report, Charles Lloyd and Mahavishnu. During the 1970s heyday of the 'Philly Sound,' Kent did extensive studio work for Gamble & Huff, Baker, Harris & Young and many others. He appears on numerous albums by the O'Jays, the Spinners, Lou Rawls, MFSB, Salsoul Orchestra, Major Harris, Blue Magic and the Trammps. He later lived in Los Angeles, where he recorded and toured with The Chambers Brothers. He returned to the east cost in the mid-1990s and has concentrated on jazz since then. He lives in Boynton Beach, Florida.
