Side Street on CD

Side Street is the second collection of original jazz by bassist Chris Maresh. Featured with him are Steve Snyder on piano and Brannen Temple on drums (the trio on his first collection, 'Tomorrow'), with the addition of sax player Sam Lipman. This CD features music with a broader scope, adding more challenge to the deeply melodic core of his compositions, a powerful addition to the consistently smooth sound of 'Tomorrow'. Native Texan Chris Maresh is a jazz bassist and Grammy-nominated composer. He lives in Austin, Texas and has performed in the U.S., Europe, Asia and Australia. Chris has performed live with: Bonnie Raitt, Michael McDonald and Pat Simmons of the Doobie Brothers, Willie Nelson, 'Fathead' Newman, Ellis Marsalis, the Austin Symphony and the Laredo Symphony. He has toured with Eric Johnson, Abra Moore, Kelly Willis, and Monte Montgomery. Chris is a sought-after session player in Austin, where he has recorded with artists including Willie Nelson, Grammy winner Eric Johnson and Grammy nominee Marcia Ball, Alejandro Escovedo, James McMurtry, Eliza Gilkyson. Chris played on the soundtracks of Spy Kids 2, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and on music appearing in Michael, Happy, Texas, and Sliding Doors. Recorded live performances include Austin City Limits shows with: Monte Montgomery, Kelly Willis, and Eric Johnson. On DVD he performs with Eric Johnson at the Eric Clapton 2004 'Crossroads' concert, and with Terry Bozzio on a DVD featuring more of Chris' music. Chris was named 'Bass Player of the Year' at the Austin Chronicle Music Awards at the SXSW Music Festival in 2002, 2005 and 2006. In 2001 his composition, 'Rain' (on which he performed with Eric Johnson and Alien Love Child), was nominated for a Grammy award (best performance of a pop instrumental). Chris released his first original jazz record, Tomorrow, in 2002, just a few months before the performance of his first string quartet by the Tosca Strings. In 2003 his first tangos were performed by Glovertango, and 2004 saw new tangos, a piece for string quintet, piano and percussion, called Silent Movie which premiered in a performance with Terry Bozzio on percussion, Steven Barber on keyboard, Chris on acoustic bass together with the Tosca Strings at the One World Theatre in Austin, Texas. February 2005 brought the Austin CD release for 'side street'. 2008 finds Chris playing jazz under his own name and with many other Austin jazz players, doing production and session work, and performing every type of music in Austin and around the country. You'll hear him on Willie Nelson's new CD, with James McMurtry on 'Just Us Kids', with Eliza Gilkyson on 'Beautiful World' and with Lyle Lovett on the soundtrack of a new movie.. Look forward to hearing more from Chris!
