Chin's Calypso CD6 on CD

All Chin's Calypso/Mento records were produced by Chin's Radio Service at 48 Church Street Kingston Jamaica, in the 50s. Producer Ivan S Chin I am very grateful to all my friends who have helped me to recover all the missing recordings. Many thanks to Ms Maureen Fortey Librarian of Decca Records for locating and sending to me, recordings, both sides, from 1013--1031, Ms Fortey told me that Decca only kept Clasical records in the library, but for some unknown reason Chin's Calypsos along with all orders and correspondences were also kept in the library. Ms Fortey also told me that she gave the stampers or masters to two recording companies to transfer the 78s to CDs. Daniel Neely was also in contact with Ms Fortey at that time. The rest was obtained by my very good friends and given to me. My many thanks also goes to Mike Garnice, Daniel Neely, Richard Noblett, Paul Coote, Paul Khouri, Richard Lyn, Andrew Roblin, Paul Banks, Stanford Wong, Carl Chang and Donald Davidson, for their very generous help to recover all those missing records and many other things. ----------------- Mike for his devoted interest in Chin's Calypso Recordings, for securing them, some at very high cost to him personally, for posting everything about Chin's on his Website and for sending the recordings to me. Many Thanks Mike. ----------------- To Daniel Neely for his recognition of the quality of all the Chin's recordings, his research into all aspects of the Chin's History, for sending me recordings that he discovered and for keeping me posted about developments. For contacting Ornell Bedasse and Alerth Bedasse and putting me in touch with them and many other things along the way, later I will give you the second part of the history about the Chin's Calypso rebirth with Dan and Richard Lyn. Thank you very much Dan. ----------------- To Richard Noblett for sending me recordings he obtained, at personal cost to him, I was in touch with Richard after he made Boogu Yagga Gal. Many thanks to you Richard for everything. ----------------- To Paul Coote for sending me the complete set of Chin's Recordings he had, for recording them on a CD and sending it to me. Thank you very much Paul for all you did. ----------------- To Paul Khouri for the use of four of his Williams/Bedasse tracks. Thank you very much Paul, I appreciate it very much. ----------------- To Richard Lyn for discovering Daniel Neely's site, contacting me and putting me in touch with Dan. For giving me many Chin's recordings he had. The story will be told later. Thank you very very much Richard. ----------------- To Andrew Roblin for sending me recordings he bought in Jamaica and for meeting me in Negril Jamaica in January 07. Thank you very much Andrew, it was a pleasure meeting you. ----------------- To Paul Banks for sending me recordings he bought in Jamaica and for taking me to meet with Alerth Bedasse after 50 years,in Jamaica in January 07 and for doing me many other favours. Thank you very much Paul,it was a pleasure meeting you. ----------------- To Stanford Wong for giving me all the Chin's recordings he had on a CD and many other things in the early stages of making the CDs. Thank you very much Stanford. ----------------- To Carl Chang for all his generous help in everything and for sending me all the recordings he received. Thank you very much Carl. ----------------- To Clive Donald Davidson for his help and guidance to COPYRITE all my recordings and to complete the BMI Royalty collection agreements and many other favours. Thank you very much Donald. ----------------------------------------------------------- From Reviewer: Razor Jack Mike Garnice makes the point perfectly, these recordings are incredibly rare. Without Mr Chin's passion for the music he recorded so long ago, you'd be lucky to hear maybe a handful of these tunes, in a life time. You would be lucky if you did, because this is fabulous music!of course, it's old-fashioned and the sound quality is very varied due to the condition of some of the source material, but this isn't (a) the best of mento compilation, it's treasure that has been long-buried. It is a facinatiing window into another time and it is also damn good fun. These comps. Probably arn't for the newcomer to this style, but for me, it's like walking into Alladin's cave. Thank you Mr Chin, and to everyone who's been involved in restoring, preserving and making these priceless gems available for all to enjoy. Andy ----------------- A Door Through Time Reviewer: John Begala This music transports listeners to a place and time they won't reach another way...and connects them to people and a way of life they will never have a chance to become directly acquainted with. Happily and soulfully EXpressive music...and to think this is only one sixth of a larger collection. Lifts you up and leaves you anxious for more - a genuine legacy...thank you Ivan Chin and everybody who played made this music! ----------------- From Reviewer: Kevin. Like A Treasure Left in a Time Capsule. 4 stars because of the sound quality. The music is a treasure. -----------------By Reviewer: Lain. All 5 CDs in this series are excellent. Mento of THE HIGHEST order. ----------------- E-Mail Thanks for your mail and for the great music on those 5 CDs I've got from you. It is a great pleasure to listen to them. Although I'm normally a record collector avoiding to buy CDs, this time it was different as this was the only chance for me to get your mento records. I would like to thank you again for making these recordings available, for producing them and putting these CDs together. Now I feel like the proud owner of these FIVE PERSONAL HAND MADE DISC. ----------------- E-Mail Thanks very much for your e-mail, I very much enjoyed the 4 Chin's CDs I bought. It was a great pleasure to hear the other recordings on the cds and I was surprised that you had recorded so many. This really is an outstanding set of recordings, I think that collectors of Jamaican Music owe a real debt to you for preserving this music for future generations. ----------------- E-Mail I have tremendously enjoyed the CDs,I especially like the bamboo sax.I was traveling recently on Air Jamaica and passed through Montego Bay. I was reading a magazine on the air plane that featured you and mentioned the CDs.I had heard some of the recordings in years past and was familiar with your band and music. I was thrilled to be able to get copies of the CDs to add to my collection and for preserving this music for future generations. ----------------- E-Mail First let me say what a great pleasure it is for me to have contact with you, the 5 CD set is without a question one of my favourite collections of music ever. Not until I discovered the MENTO MUSIC SITE had I ever heard any of Alerth Bedasse's vocals, man he is one slick vocalist. I can only imagine hanging out with those cool Jamaican cats, tearing it up after hours at your shop, that must have been really something. Listening to the recordings gives me a great feeling of being right there 50+ years ago, I love my red shoes and rough rider but my absolute favourite up to this point is calypso pepperpot. On that note let me once again express my sincerest gratitude to you for still having the passion to re-release the coolest music I've ever had the pleasure of listening to,Chin's Calypso Sextet. ----------------- Reviewer: Maxine Eldemire Treasure unearthed The music is great and well arranged. I grew up in Clarendon and in the 1970s heard from older folks how my uncle Alerth could sing. When I migrated to Kingston in the 80s and Cayman Islands in the 90s Uncle Alerth told me stories of the band and the hit'night food' made but had none of his own record. I have heard a cassete tape by another uncle in the US but was a poor quality. This CD5 is really great for me to hear his voice, now that he is dead, I will certainly share this site with my friends and famiy. ----------------------------------------------------------- Excelent anthology Reviewer: Xavi All six cds are an excelent way to know more about Ivan Chin and the mento in Jamaica. I hope to have six more at least!. ----------------------------------------------------------- This CD6 contains the first and last recordings produced in the 50s by Everald Williams and Alerth Bedasse. The first was Juicy Oyster/ Weekly Lover. Then Night Food/Walk And Talk. The last was Our Beautiful Wedding Waltz and a later version of I Visited A Wedding.
