Music in the Air on CD

The philosopher Friedrich Hegel observed that 'architecture is frozen music'. The converse is also true: music is liquid architecture, a fluid structure that surrounds and shelters us. Like the redwood beams arching over our beloved church, the songs of our faith are lofty and inspiring, solid and trustworthy. They define the sacred space of our liberal religious tradition. Unitarian Universalism is a pluralistic religion, fed by many taproots and seeking to embrace the best of many cultures and traditions. The diversity of styles, sounds, and voices on this disc echoes the inclusivity of our faith. These twenty-five hymns from 'Singing the Living Tradition' are a record of our collective spiritual life. Ranging from the familiar to the boldly unconventional, they are the songs we sing in celebration, mourning, protest, and love. For the singers and instrumentalists of our Oakland church, recording these hymns has been a profound spiritual journey and an act of love. It is our hope that congregations and individuals everywhere will take as much joy and inspiration from them as we do. The cover photograph is of the ceiling in the sanctuary of the First Unitarian Church of Oakland.
