Timeless on CD

As an accomplished songwriter, Cathy Block has written songs for Diana Ross, Al Jarreau and Kool & The Gang. Now, as a recording artist she brings her considerable talents to children's music. The result is Timeless -- a wonderfully diverse collection of 13 original songs that both children and adults will love. Some of these songs are playful, some are pretty -- all are refreshingly honest. The depth of artistic craftsmanship that Cathy has shown in her songs for adults applies to her children's music as well. With musical styles ranging from softshoe to Zydeco, and lyrics that are immediately accessible to young ears, Timeless is an album that both children and adults will enjoy. In Cathy's live performances she finds that kids are drawn to her material on first listening. They love to sing the 'The Ooh Ooh Song', and dance and pantomime to songs like 'Hold That Moon' and 'Faces.' And then there are the softer and insightful tunes like 'Simple' ('Simple things sure do shine if you just open your eyes real wide'); 'Rainy Day' ('Now rainy days are special days/Because of the things I do/The special ways I spend my rainy days with you'); and 'Things That I Wish For' ('I saw a great big rainbow/Put on a colorful show/It fell down from the sky/Just to land in my hand.../And you can bet for sure/These are things that I wish for'). The album includes vocals by several children (ages 7-12) from Cathy's own neighborhood. Cathy Block turned her attention to children's music because she believes that music plays an important part in children's lives. 'Music inspires a child's imagination and children need to be inspired. Their imagination needs to be nurtured. Music can play a positive role in our lives. It reaches an aesthetic part of us, and it brings people together.' Cathy hopes that the songs on Timeless will help children begin an appreciation for music and the arts that they can carry with them through their lives. 'I wanted to create something musically nourishing for children, something my children could be proud of. This music is honest, with no pretensions. It's not making an attempt to hook anybody. I called the album 'Timeless' because I would hope that today's children might sing these songs to their children's children.'
