Rare Creatures on CD

Carolyn Dowd writes innovative songs that embrace and abandon categories like roots, rock, alt, country and pop. She mines the genres and outright pilfers wherever beauty beckons, retaining a quirky lyricism. Growing up in Johnson City, Tennessee, Carolyn learned three-part harmony by singing rounds with mom and dad, both classical pianists and music teachers. Learning piano while in diapers, Carolyn developed a keen ear for music and preferred improvising to reading. In her early 20s, she sang and played keyboards in covers bands, and later sang with an excellent jazz quartet, Mirage. For awhile she played solo keyboard jazz and sang pop standards in local hotels and restaurants, and then moved to Nashville, worked as a reporter and sang at night with another covers band. Eventually she burned out on other people's tunes, preferring her own, and began appearing at open mics, local cafes, and outdoor fairs. After earning a master's degree in English lit in Murfreesboro, she moved to San Francisco in the mid '90s. It's there she makes her home, and has played the following: Slim's, the Hotel Utah, Bazaar Café, Blue Bear School, Freight and Salvage, and other furtive little joints. In 2001 she put out a four-song demo CD and in 2007 she released her full-length CD, "Rare Creatures." She has worked with Bonnie Hayes (hit songwriter for Bonnie Raitt, Bette Midler and Cher); Bill Spooner (mastermind and founder of "The Tubes"), and and other people too lovely and multiple to mention.
