Music for Loons on CD

Memphis-born, Brooklyn-based Cameron Hull is a classically-trained opera singer turned alt-folk artist whose haunting, emotive voice and fiercely independent writing channel the ghosts of musical visionaries past and push genre limitations and expectations. Hull's self-titled 2004 debut featured appearances by a roster of indie darlings such as Jaymay, Dawn Landes, The Shivers' Keith Zarriello, and Quinn Walker, and showcased Hull's ability to craft perfect yet quirky uptempo pop songs. Music for Loons, Hull's second full-length release, finds him paring things down to just his powerful pipes and intricate acoustic guitar arrangements, with field recordings of crickets and loon calls lending their chorus to Hull's witty, impressionistic narratives. Press: 'Songwriter and singer Cameron Hull is easy to enjoy, but hard to place. His songs sound a bit like folk music of the 1940s and '50s, but with a modern edginess. He mixes humor and sincerity in a disconcerting way, and his singing voice displays aspects of his operatic background without sounding at all stuffy." -David Garland, WNYC's "Spinning on Air" "Cameron Hull is a young singer-songwriter in love with the old-timey sound of early 20th century folk music. With a high, lonesome voice from a bygone era, Hull croons about troubled lives, plagued by broken hearts, violence and madness." -NPR 'Postoperatic singer-songwriter Cameron Hull croons and mixes moods ranging from tragedy to comedy in an earthy, accessible style.' -Time Out New York "There's nobody else like Cameron Hull. Nobody. An expert songsmith with a wicked sense of humor." -Jezebel Music "Hull's mid-century, birdsong croon will render you uncertain at first, but by the end of the night you'll be rushing home to storm the internet for his two spectral, sentimental albums." -Chief Magazine "one of those off-the-radar albums passed on from music savvy roommate to music savvy roommate. Although it often holds the feel of a coffee-house guitar performance, Hull's music captures attention with the same eccentric twang as Neutral Milk Hotel and Iron and Wine. Every second of 'Music for Loons' evokes a strange longing for the ethereal imaginings of childhood, mixing adult themes like love and loss with a rambling, irregular musical pace...boasts the sort of sound that secures nearly every artist off the music industry speedway a loyal and grounded following.' -Montana Kaimin (University of Montana)
