Sue Chris & Carlos on CD

This CD is the first outing of the Sue, Chris, Carlos trio. Rather than adapting a theme or consistency of mood for the CD, the trio has chosen a format that is similar to their live performance style. Eclectic, that's what it is. It includes ragtime, Dixieland, ballads, country, novelty vaudeville tunes, traditional jazz, and much more. Big Mama Sue, leader, vocalist, and washboard player, is a fixture on the traditional jazz festival circuit. She has led many different small jazz ensembles on this circuit, and this trio is the current offering. Sue combines the singing styles of Red Hot Mama, blues, ballads, and vaudeville for a very balanced and unusual program. She is considered one of the finest washboard players on the circuit (a dubious but hard earned distinction). Mr. Excitement (Chris Calabrese) has been the backbone of Mama Sue's ensembles for many years on the piano. His brilliant ideas, and dynamic attack make him one of the finest traditional jazz pianists today. On this CD, Chris debuts his newly acquired skill on the soprano sax. And he sings. Boy does he sing! Carlos Donaho's voice has been compaired to Howard Keel, or John Raitt. He is equally at home with a beautiful ballad, a country song, a Dixieland tune or gospel. This CD features him on all of the above. Big Mama Sue was chosen Musician of the year at Dixieland Monterey 2005. They had this to say: 'Always a favorite headliner, Big Mama Sue is more than just an accomplished jazz musician, she's also a tribute to the good things in life--good music, good friends, good fun and good imagination...If you lose your smile on the way in, don't worry, it'll show up when Big Mama Sue steps on stage.'
