Jazz pianist Andrew Hill is usually identified with the 1960s avant-garde faction, but even within that crowd he was unique. Hill's approach embraced composition and harmony as much as it did freedom and fury. Like Thelonius Monk, he'd never unleash a downpour of notes when a few subtly well-placed ones could thunder just as powerfully. COMPULSION is a 1965 session featuring horn champions John Gilmore (rarely seen performing outside of Sun Ra's Arkestra) and Freddie Hubbard, the underrated drummer Joe Chambers, and a percussion section. Hill's lengthy, open-ended tunes inspire thought-provoking statements from all contributors.
