Life from Life's Debris on CD

Born the son of a civil rights advocate, Southern Baptist minister in Mississippi, I was destined to speak my mind and act as if it were some higher authority. The bible refers to it as pride and duty, the juxtaposition seed that would become Alan Kent Barnette My first attempt at living the musician lifestyle was done under the guise of a Christian musician, sharing stages with Amy Grant, Dallas Holm and other luminaries of the Christian music genre', a true leap of faith for a small town Texas boy with dreams of grandeur. The journey was my education. I got to view the lives behind the curtains, watching the Jeckle & Hyde show of the lives of the so-called "God's People". Later, based out of Boulder, Colorado, I toured with rock, blues and jazz combos throughout the southwest, taking billing under the more the recognizable names of The Fifth Dimension, Rare Silk, Gary Pucket & The Union Gap, Starship, Huey Lewis & The News, Joe "King" Carrasco, Lynn Skinner, The True Believers and Flash Cadillac & The Continental Kids. It was also during this period that I became much more vocal about my personal and political views, working with writers Ann Waldman & Allen Ginsberg to bring focus on to the discrimination and abuse of Gay and Lesbian & people of color at the hands of The Promise Keeper Organization and famous preacher of hatred, Reverend Fred Phelps, culminating with a front page story in USA Today international newspaper. After mediocre luck as a touring musician, I attempted a songwriting career, vying for a position with the Warner Brothers label. Along the way, sharing a spotlight with established writers Catsby Jones, Dana Cooper, Dave Thorpe & David S. Lewis (collectively amassing songwriting credits for George Strait, Clint Black, Tanya Tucker and Travis Tritt among others) I finally had the good sense to come home to Texas and set up shop in Austin where I soon became known for versatility of style and showmanship on the country, jazz, blues and rock stages. As for activism, my current strength is more health care than demonstrational, focusing heavily on fundraising for Austin's Aids care organizations. I've released four CDs, two as a member of Jim Stringer's Austin Music Band, one with my band, The LaSalles and now my first solo project. I am currently writing and recording my second solo effort with Troy Warden and continue to jump from stage to stage in Austin, Texas.
