Denbaya on CD

The first release from Kanaga System Krush. A Fair Trade World Music label featuring Traditional and Contemporary West African musicians. We have been recording in Mali the last four years. Our label is dedicated to preserving Traditional music from Mali. We have raised the bar in field recording with professional multi track digital recordings, which are then mixed at one of the top recording studios in Northern California. At the same time, we are all over the modern music scene playing, studying, and recording. We feel this gives us a fresh more inside perspective for producing Traditonal and Contemporary music from some of Mali's most talented artists. Abdoul Doumbia was born in Bamako, Mali in 1963. He began playing Djembe at age five and completed a 16 year apprenticeship with Moriba Keita from Ziragori, Guinea. Moriba is the direct disciple of Daba Keita, the famed Mendianni revivalist. Abdoul was the lead Djembe player of Bamako's prestigious performance troupe Babemba for nine years. Beginning at age 19 he was chosen six years in a row to represent Mali nationally as their lead Djembe player. At age 26, he was brought to the United States by Brown University, where he was professor of African Music Studies for six years. He also taught regularly at Yale, University of Connecticut and Princeton. In 1996, he moved to Boulder, Colorado where he currently lives and teaches. Abdoul's first album recorded in Mali is an explosive demonstration of rhythmic mastery. Mali's most internationally recognized djembe player is at his best. With his tasteful articulation of space, accent and phrase on a broad range of instruments, from djembe, to double nang-nang (bell), to Jeli dun-dun, to bongolo, Abdoul re-affirms his knowledge and mastery of the vast percussion traditions of Mali. Combining diverse arrangements with deep cultural knowledge, Abdoul creates a fresh and unique sound, at once modern and traditional. Accompanying are some of Bamako's hottest young players, featuring Adama Couloubally, a soulful vocalist and rising star of the kamelen ngoni. Listen to Abdoul as he truly makes the drum speak.
